Casino, Marino

FREE ENTRY with Dublin Pass

The Casino is considered to be one of the finest 18th century neo-classical buildings in Europe. Designed by Sir William Chambers as a pleasure house for James Caulfield, 1st Earl of Charlemont, The Casino meaning 'small house', surprisingly contains 16 finely decorated rooms. These include an entrance hall, saloon, boudoir, library, state room and kitchen. The interior of the Casino is intricately decorated with ornate plasterwork and richly patterned marquetry floors.

From a distance, the simplicity of the Casino is its most striking feature, as it gives the appearance of a one-roomed one-storied building. Outside the building resembles a Greek temple with Roman architecture but inside the house functioned as an 18th century small house with all the practicalities of 18th century living. A visit to the Casino will reveal the many clever architectural illusions created by its architect and builder.

Entry to the Casino is by guided tour only. Access is via a flight of stone steps to the basement and staircase on the interior. There is no wheelchair access.

Please Note: In order to protect the unique inlaid floors in the building, visitors may be asked to remove their shoes and wear disposable footwear which are provided free.
