FREE ENTRY with Dublin Pass+ Founded c.1030 by King Sitriuc Silkbeard and Dunan, the first Bishop of Dublin, Christ Church Cathedral has stood at the heart of the city of Dublin for nearly 1000 years. Dublin’s Patron Saint, Laurence O’Toole and Strongbow (Richard de Clare) were both involved in building the Cathedral as we see it today. In 1562, the nave roof vaulting collapsed and destroyed the south nave, however, the Cathedral was restored to its current condition in the 1870s by the architect George Edmund Street. The crypt is the oldest surviving structure in Dublin and is one of the largest medieval crypts in Europe, extending the length of the Cathedral. Admission to the Cathedral includes entry to the crypt and the ‘Treasures Of Christ’ exhibition where much of the Cathedral’s plate and manuscripts are on display, including the tabernacle used by James II and gold plate presented to the Cathedral by William III after the Battle of the Boyne. Visitors may also avail of the Cathedral gift shop selling quality Cathedral and Irish souvenirs and the Crypt Café which serves delicious coffees, lunches and afternoon teas. Guided tours of the Cathedral and belfry are available – phone or see the website for details.
